Pumpkin – An Exotic In Watercolour – Commission

I thought I’d share with you the process of painting Pumpkin in watercolour. The brief was to do her in the style of one of my sheep paintings, which are very loose and splashy. I haven’t done any cats at all in that style so it’s a bit challenging. But here goes….

This is stage 2 in the painting. She is a black, white and ginger cat so the next stage of the painting is to add some colourful darks and those lovely ginger patches in her coat. This is where things start to get splashy.

Nearly there! I’ve got the markings in her face and brought some colour to her eyes and ears. Now for the final bit, her whiskers and the finishing touches.

Here is the finished painting of Pumpkin. The last bit was to finish off her white fur and her eyes, nose and whiskers. She’s roughly 16×12 inches on Fabriano paper. My first drippy cat in watercolour.

Here’s a close up of the finished painting. You can see the texture in the paper and some of the lovely granulation in the paint.
