A Commissioned Cat Triptych
The Brady Bunch

Oil on linen
The Initial Ideas
Simone is a lucky lady! She has three stunning siamese brothers. She commissioned me to paint their portraits and initially we tried various ideas that showed the three bothers together. However I also did some sketches of each brother separately because she had some wonderful photos of them and I could see three individual head and shoulder paintings working very well. Each one had a striking pose.

The Painting Process
Simone like the idea of a triptych, but she wanted to keep their names in the paintings just as I had them in the sketches. I hadn't painted fonts before and I found it a little tricky to do! Each painting is a 14x10 inch canvas painted in oils on fine grained linen.

I worked in stages, first doing the sketching and blocking in on each painting and then gradually building up each of the cats. I needed to work on all three at the same time so I could get the right balance in their colouring, I set up two easels, one with two paintings on the board and another for the third. That way I could move between the paintings easily.
