Sweetpea - Brown Burmese

April 7th, 2006

Sweatpea is an eight year old brown Burmese and she’s clearly quite a character! Her owner has commissioned a painting of her and I’m painting her in acrylics on William Turner watercolour paper.

We decided that she looked wonderful belly up on the soft cream fur throws.

I started the painting with a loose wash of colour as the under painting and then started building layers of colour and tone to gradually create her form.

Even though she’s a brown cat, there are lots of colours in her fur; reds, browns, golds, greens and violets. And the cream throw she’s lying on has shades of gold and rose and violet in it too.

She looks so inviting doesn’t she? I just want to reach out and tickle her belly.

You Called?

This little painting of a pretty Tortie cat. As she walks along she hears something and looks back over her shoulder. Perhaps it’s a tin opening? Tortoiseshell cats have such beautiful coats, there are so many colours in their fur. This cat, Twinkie, is no exception.

I started by building up layers of paint on watercolour paper gradually adding colour to her coat. Blues and violets in her dark fur, shades of green appear where the grass throws colour into her coat and then lovely rich yellows, golds and oranges in her bright patches. She has bright green clear eyes and a red collar.

In the background the grass is full of colour with every shade of green from bright grass green to dark cool greens in the distance.
