Missy the ginger cat and Biggie the king charles spaniel are the best of friends, Don’t they look adorable cuddled up together? ? I love the warmth there is in the painting. Cats and dogs can be friends and I tried to capture their obvious affection for each other.

I painted this commission of a pair of furry friends in oils on a board and framed them in a gorgeous shadowbox frame so that the painting floats over the background. I’m really pleased with the way it looks in the frame. :-)

Here She Comes – Sold https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/fluffy-cats/here-she-comes/ https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/fluffy-cats/here-she-comes/#comments_reply Fri, 06 Mar 2026 13:00:29 +0000 https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/?p=10842 There’s something magical about the moment a cat decides to walk straight towards you, tail high, completely sure of herself. That’s the feeling I wanted to bottle in this painting. This ginger girl appeared in bright splashes of orange, yellow, pink and soft greens, the colours almost chose themselves as the water spread across the handmade paper.

The slightly abstract style lets her personality shine through: warm, curious, a little cheeky, and absolutely delighted to be the centre of attention. The deckled edges of the handmade paper add to the charm, making the piece feel natural, soft and tactile, as if she could step right off it at any moment.

So pleased that Here She Comes has sold through the Society Of Feline Artists online gallery.

Merlin – Sold https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/merlin/ https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/merlin/#comments_reply Wed, 04 Mar 2026 12:58:12 +0000 https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/?p=10835 Black cats aren’t really black at all… when you look closely, their fur is full of hidden colours. In this one I’ve let the blues, reds and purples shine through, with drips and splashes adding to his character. And those green eyes? They’re always the star. I found myself completely lost in the colours while painting him. His green eyes held me the whole time, as if he was watching me paint. Even the drips seemed to belong, like Blackie had decided to leave his own pawprint on the painting. Painting sometimes seem to have minds of their own.

A watercolour painting of a black cat, his fur is full of colour abd he has colourful whiskers.

Topaz – Angles, Gold and a Little Attitude https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/tabby-cats/topaz-angles-gold-and-a-little-attitude/ https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/tabby-cats/topaz-angles-gold-and-a-little-attitude/#comments_reply Fri, 13 Feb 2026 14:17:00 +0000 https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/?p=10827 Oriental cats are basically geometry with personality. Triangular ears. Fine, sculpted faces. Long lines and strong opinions. Topaz is all of that… but wrapped in warmth.

I painted him in layered browns and earthy tones, letting hints of green, blue and soft orange melt into the handmade paper. When you work wet into wet on this kind of paper, the pigment sinks into the fibres and softens naturally, which feels perfect for a coat that’s sleek but still alive with movement.

He’s finished with gold whiskers. I always love this stage. Those final lines catch the light as you walk past, and suddenly the painting shifts slightly. It feels more present. More alert. Very Oriental. :-) The paper itself has four natural deckle edges, formed during the papermaking process.

Under the Blanket – Sold https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/siamese-cats/under-the-blanket/ https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/blog/cats/siamese-cats/under-the-blanket/#comments_reply Wed, 11 Feb 2026 17:07:51 +0000 https://www.thepaintedcat.co.uk/?p=10824 There’s something about a cat tucked under a blanket that feels almost sacred. That self-made den. That look that says, “I am warm. I am safe. I am absolutely not moving.”

This Siamese appeared like that one evening, wrapped in a soft lilac throw, with only his face visible. The contrast stopped me in my tracks, deep chocolate fur, cool shadows, and those impossibly blue eyes glowing out from the dark.

I painted this piece on a gold-prepared board, which gives the whole painting a quiet warmth beneath the surface. The whiskers were scratched back through the wet oil paint to reveal that gold underneath. It’s a small detail, but when the light hits them, they catch and shimmer, just like real whiskers flashing in the light.

It’s only 8 × 8 inches, but it has that close, intimate feeling I love in small works. The kind you lean in towards. If you live with a Siamese, you’ll recognise that look. Half hidden. Fully aware. Always watching.
See him in the gallery….
