Portrait Of Toots And Evie

Toots and Evie are two gorgeous tuxedo cats, full of character and charm, and they were an absolute pleasure to paint.

This commissioned portrait was created in watercolour on handmade Two Rivers paper. I love working on this surface because the texture gives the paint a beautiful softness, especially around fur, while still allowing me to build up those deep, velvety darks.

As the painting developed, I gradually added the little details that make each cat feel like themselves, their markings, expressions and, of course, those all-important whiskers. I painted the whiskers in gold so they catch the light and stand out against the dark fur with just a hint of sparkle.

Toots also has the sweetest little heart-shaped marking on her back, which made her especially lovely to paint.

These two have been such a joy to bring to life on paper. 🖤✨🐾
